public architecture

rankin house lies in a heavily wooded creek bed in Missoula, Montana. The main body of the house is parallel to the creek, allowing the sight and sound of its year-round flow to be expected within the 110′ long space. The house is enclosed on the opposite side with a board-formed concrete wall that stops short of the roof, allowing a continous band of clerestory around the house for light and circulation.

falcon residence keeps it simple. With its masonry base, nestled into the sloping site, a steel structure cantilevers out exposing a glass edge. The full height perimeter glass wraps the western edge offering a view of San Diego’s downtown skyline. public architecture

reminiscent of 4 years ago

sad to report all the wild fire evacuations taking place just 15 miles north and south from downtown san diego. these pictures were taken almost 4 years ago to the day of the cedar fire.

100% design show happened last month in london. wurd from designboom and shift is the green theme. one of my all-time favorite bags shown above from qurz, inc.

There are eight exhibiters from Japan. “Monacca“, the wooden bag and furniture series was very appealing. They use thinning wood, which is usually thrown away as waste in Japan, to remain in keeping with the theme of being green. The attaché cases were particularly appealing, especially a good idea for keeping your laptop safely stored away. With this design, the ancient Japanese woodcraft tradition is being celebrated in a very modern fashion. Along with this are Zabuton, the traditional Japanese low seated stools, again utilising the thinning wood.

stitch by ronan and erwan

At the intersection of green design, space-making, and textiles, the Bouroullec brothers’ Stitch Room is one part design genius, one part child-like playtime. Known for designs that cross the boundary between furniture and architecture, the creations of this design duo tend to emphasize possibilities, and their exploration of space in The Stitch Room is no exception. Using eco-friendly textiles from the ultra-green Danish company Kvadrat, the brothers have created organized, versatile spaces that can be transformed to almost any imaginable use. via inhabitat
