el nino is bringin it!

it’s not often that it rains in san diego… but when it does rain… it pours. the courtyard was taking the brunt of the storm. in minutes, the drain was almost covered.
architectural salvage

patrick installed the pivot door this morning. we designed the courtyard and downstairs around this door… why? it was a find. most all glass / window shops will have salvage.. old storefront doors & windows from showrooms, clients who pay for windows & doors but change the design after the fact… so we lucked out when we found this second-hand U.S. aluminum pivot door. the aluminum is perfect…
rough opening

a lot of work has been completed to make this rough opening possible. lots of excavation that resulted in hole what seemed to fit an large swimming lane… footings to replace stem walls that were cracked and undermined… and a new masonry wall to frame in the private courtyard for the space.
interior: bathroom

We’re 99% finished with the bathroom, minus a place to hang towels and the completion of the skylight.
courtyard constructed

The masons make quick work of laying block. The walls were constructed and waterproofed; grout to happen tomorrow when the forms are created for the stairs.
block-by-block

The courtyard has 2 walls, west and south. Each wall consists of a ‘course’. A course is a row. The south wall is 10 courses in height by 23 block in width. Each block is 8x8x16. We went with precision block from RCP in charcoal and onyx. It was a small order of ‘extras’ from the production line.

A few pattern studies sketched out in illustrator for the mason to follow.
meet the masons

with the footing dug, the masons started to lay out the foundation for the masonry.
drain-o

i ran to home depot around 4pm to pick up 40 ft of ABS for the courtyard drain. 30 minutes later, digging for the drain was underway.
gotta a pool and a pond

making room for the courtyard. these guys make quick work of digging in very hard soil.
